Operating principles of float type level switches and application examples

Float level switches are general liquid level switches, and are used to detect liquids..
These level switches have been used in various locations where liquid levels must be detected. A. We recommend our float type level switch for low cost liquid measurement.
The principle of float type level meter is that a float moves up and down due to buoyancy. A reed switch in a stem is actuated by a magnet in the float, and outputs detection signal (see the figure below).
However, the level meter may not measure liquids with some viscosities and specific gravities.


A case when measurement was not possible

Liquid with high viscosity (such as honey) cannot be measured. (although a liquid with viscosity at the level of milk can be measured). If the pressure inside of the tank is high or the liquid’s specific gravity is low, the float will not operate, so these circumstances do not permit measurement with the standard specification.

However, the following options may be useful for some specific gravities and high-pressured liquids.

Options

Surface processing: Electrolytic grinding and buffing are available for surface processing.
High temperature specification: The level meter can use up to 160 degrees.

Application example・Level switch that can measure both temperature and level at once

Q. Now we are examining to measure temperature and level in a tank. As the tank is difficult to process, we are anxious about installing a level meter and thermometer. Is there any good method?

A. We got a result by measuring the level and temperature using one level meter.
To measure level and temperature of liquid, installation of meter and thermometer on conventional tank is often difficult.In such case, we recommend our thermometer integrated level switch.

The level meter shown on the left has improved processing inside the sensor in order to increase its temperature-sensing ability.
It is ideal as a space-saving level meter (if you want to measure both temperature and level using one meter).


This meter can also be used to measure the temperature of a pressurized tank and prevent dry heating.

Application example・Float type level meter with wide measuring range

Q. We are now using a float type level meter. It has a large non-sensing area on the rod and setting it is annoying and its measuring range is limited.

A. Float type liquid meter has advantage of not be affected by material on electrical aspect. However it has the following disadvantages: Large non-sensing area. The measuring range is limited. Initial setting is troublesome.
Our new type of liquid meter improved over the troublesome use of conventional level meters, and has many functions, such as delay setting, as standard.
